Blood Pressure) Hypertension or high blood pressure is a persistent high pressure from a systolic and diastolic pressure test. Systolic pressure is the pressure exerted by the heart as the muscle beats, that is, when the muscle squeezes the blood out of the heart. Diastolic pressure is when the muscle is relaxed, allowing blood to flow back into the heart. It is common knowledge that blood pressure rises with age so normal is based on your gender, age, and other factors. In general, however, for most adults a normal reading would be 85 or less for diastolic and 140 or less systolic or 104/85. The average blood pressure for adults is 120/80. A test reading for systolic at 90 would qualify as! high blood pressure. Trying
to lower blood pressure so that you don’t wind up with a stroke,
heart attack, or kidney disease can be quite a challenge. For some
time no one really had a clue as to what makes blood pressure rise
and fall. Doctors have for decades, recommended reducing salt intake
yet this has not been an effective recommendation at all. In fact
this anti‑salt strategy may backfire. Some researchers are now
saying that by avoiding salt you may be creating the very health
risk you are trying to avoid. A quote from Healing With Vitamins
by the Editors of Prevention, states: “A rise in blood pressure
means you need to add minerals to your diet not cut back on salt,
says {David McCarron, M.D. David
McCarron, M.D. is a Professor of medicine and head of the Division
of Nephrology, Hypertension and Clinical Pharmacology at Oregon
Health Sciences University in Portland.} “Tragically, the idea
that salt is bad for your blood pressure is One of the most
generally accepted notions out there.” It is not easy to get
agreeing Viewpoints in this area as the effects of sodium chloride
on blood pressure are quite complex. Dr. McCaron says, “our lab
has found that people who experience rises in blood pressure when
they take sodium chloride are probably responding the sodium only in
the absence of potassium, calcium and magnesium.” A study conducted by a group of scientists revealed that heavy salt users had nearly the same blood pressure readings as those who had restricted their salt intake. Up to 67%, in one study, remained unaffected when placed on a very low salt diet, which seemed to indicate that some people are salt‑sensitive where others are not. It is more likely that relative deficiencies of other minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium in the diet are the culprit. It doesn’t hurt to reduce salt yet it just doesn’t make sense that sodium, a mineral that the body requires to survive, could be so harmful. Healthy people seek 3,500 to 4,200 mg in their diet. Without salt blood pressure would be very low and consciousness could be lost. Signs & Symptoms of Hypertension ‑ usually there are no symptoms until the case becomes severe. Hypertension crisis symptoms are: Headache, drowsiness confusion, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, nose bleed, severe shortness of breath. The best way to ascertain whether you have hypertension (high blood pressure) is to have a blood pressure test.
